2009

January 1, 2010

I’ve been thinking about a “goodbye 2009/hello 2010” post and wasn’t coming up with much of anything.  Thankfully, I found this list so I’m stealing it.  Because I love lists.

1.  What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
Slalom skied by starting on 2 skis and then kicking one off…it was by accident but it worked!  oh!  and i started running.  i was supposed to run my first 5k 4 days after B was admitted to the hospital.

2.  Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I never make new year’s resolutions.  They’re so strange to me.  It seems if something needs to be changed, you should just change it when you realize it needs changin’.  No use waiting around for January 1st to do it.

3.  Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not this year.

4.  Did anyone close to you die?
Not this year.  (thank you, Lord!)

5.  What countries did you visit?
None this year.  (geez, most boring answers ever!)

6.  What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
a closer walk with the Lord

7.  What dates from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
i can’t think of any from the first part of the year, but there are so many from the past couple of months…
sep 30 – took B to the dr b/c of swollen lymph nodes
oct 6 – took him back b/c of a lot of other symptoms; admitted to hospital
oct 7 – diagnosis of leukemia
nov 20 – first positive culture for fungal infection

8.  What was your biggest achievement of the year?
finally falling into a rhythm of parenting 2 young kids…and then that got blown out of the water in october.

9.  What was your biggest failure?
i’m sure there were plenty.  probably falls under the realm of not having enough patience with my husband and kids.  thank goodness for God’s mercy and love!

10.  Did you suffer an illness or injury?
nothing remarkable – though it does seem like i’ve gotten the stomach flu EVERY year since i’ve had kids.  and each time it reminds me about why i don’t want to be pregnant again.  (of course there’s a whole list of reasons why i DO want to be pregnant again…but we won’t get into that now)

11.  What was the best thing you bought?
a weight watchers membership.  too bad living in the hospital for 3 months has nullified all of my hard work.

12.  Whose behavior merited celebration?
my husband’s.  he’s a saint for putting up with me.  and he’s the best dad ever.  i’m so thankful, especially over the last 3 months, that God gave me such a wonderful man.

13.  Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
my daughter’s when she acts like the 3-year-old that she is and has a huge meltdown in the middle of target because i will not buy her “just! one! more! pair! of! shoes! momma!”

14.  Where did most of your money go?
well, we’ve only gotten 2 hospital bills so far so the answer is still the mortgage.  next year?  will be a completely different story.

15.  What did you get really, really, really excited about?
B sleeping through the night…JJ starting gymnastics…B learning to walk…JJ starting preschool…date nights with the husband

16.  Compared to this time last year are you
a) happier or sadder?
it’s hard to say…i’m not unhappy…but i’m not exactly thrilled with everything we’ve been through and the long road ahead of us
 b) thinner or fatter?
definitely thinner.  thank you weight watchers!
c) richer or poorer?
the same.  i can’t ever make any headway on saving money.  i need a dave ramsey lesson again.

17. What do you wish you’d done more of?
gone or more dates with J…paid more attention to my kids

18.  What do you wish you’d done less of?
spent time on the computer…i seriously think i might have an addiction

19.  How did you spend Christmas?
snowed in.  JJ and I were at home and J and B were at the hospital.  we couldn’t all be together until the 26th.  thankfully my kids are too young to read a calendar so they were none the wiser.

20.  Did you fall in love in 2009?
yes, with the tv show Glee.  have you seen it??  you should.  you really really should.  in fact, i think you should stop reading right now and go find yourself and episode to watch.  this one is my favorite.  i laugh every time i watch that clip.

21.  What was your favorite TV program?
oh besides, Glee?  i’m also in love with LOST.  and so completely and utterly heartbroken that this is it’s last season.

23.  What was the best book you read?
i’m not sure…i read a lot of books.  i read the twilight series (which i didn’t hate, but i also didn’t see the hype); i read several books by jodi picoult; and lots of books by karen kingsbury.  i don’t think i could pick a “best.”

24.  What did you want and get this year?
a new jacket.  thanks J for trying to help me be trendy!

25.  What did you want and not get?
to fit into a size 6 again.

26.  What was your favorite film of this year?
ugh.  i don’t like the words ‘favorite’ and ‘best.’  such pressure to pick just one!  The Hangover was really, really funny.

27.  What did you do on your birthday?
i don’t remember.  and not because i did anything exciting that caused me to not remember.  just because i’m old and boring.

28. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
if cancer didn’t exist.

29.  How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
i like cute clothes…but i don’t like to be uncomfortable and i don’t like to spend a lot of my money on cute clothes.  therefore, i usually end up looking kind of frumpy and mom-like.  oh well.

30.  What kept you sane?
prayer

31.  What political issue stirred you the most?
healthcare reform.  by far.

32.  Who do you miss?
well i want to answer “our lives before cancer” but that’s not exactly a ‘who’ is it?
i miss my best friend from high school who lives in another state.

33.  Who was the best new person you met?
people from the new church we started attending in august.  there was one girl in particular (“L”) who really reached out to me and i appreciate it greatly!

by the way, it really bothers me that there are 33 questions here (as opposed to 30 or 35).

Happy New Year!

that last answer about the number of questions made me laugh out LOUD. i forgot how math oriented you are.

also…i totally understand about loving cute clothes but loving being comfortable more. at least you have kids so when you look “mom-like” you can say, “well, I’m a mom!” WHAT IS MY EXCUSE??? for example, i am at home wearing sweats, a tshirt and a CARDIGAN.

perfect outfit! i don’t see the problem! there are literally 4 cardigans in my shopping cart at oldnavy.com….just waiting on them to go back on sale.

btw, do you remember the math clock? 😉
